Great reference for the HR Generalist

As a Human Resource Generalist one is responsible for a vast amount of knowledge. As I researched which general reference book to add to my library, I consulted the "HRCI's PHR and SPHR Certification Guide" for which books and authors most frequently appeared in the notes. I found this book/authors the most. This is the most recent editoin and covers an extensive amount of information. A good feature is the frequent recommendations for places on the internet where one can investigate the topics further. Is it really worth so much??

I have just started my class that uses this book. It seems like a fairly good book. It's organized well enough. But it was $100! And when you get it, it's a lot smaller and shorter of a book than I was expecting for some reason. My professor said that the 12th edition was different enough from the 11th that we couldn't use the old one or we would be lost.
